Shor's Algorithm: Breaking RSA

Shor's Algorithm

Shor's algorithm is the most famous quantum algorithm, capable of finding the prime factors of an integer exponentially faster than the best-known classical algorithm.

This poses a significant threat to modern public-key cryptography, such as RSA, which relies on the difficulty of factoring large numbers. While current quantum computers are not yet powerful enough to break real-world encryption, the theoretical foundation is solid.

Grover's Algorithm: Searching Unstructured Data

Grover's Algorithm

Grover's algorithm provides a quadratic speedup for searching an unstructured database or solving constraint satisfaction problems.

If you have N items, a classical computer needs to check N/2 items on average. Grover's algorithm can find the item in roughly √N steps using amplitude amplification.

Key Concepts

  • Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) The quantum analogue of the discrete Fourier transform, crucial for phase estimation and Shor's algorithm.
  • Amplitude Amplification A technique used in Grover's algorithm to increase the probability of measuring the correct state.
  • Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) A hybrid quantum-classical algorithm used to find the ground state energy of a molecule, suitable for near-term devices.
